During the whole of Semana Santa (Holy Week), street processions are organised in most Spanish towns each evening, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. People carry statues of saints around on floats or wooden platforms. The religious fraternities and brotherhoods are responsible for carrying the statues and organising the penitents and musicians. All these processions are carried out in an atmosphere of mourning. The people who carry the weight of the floats are called "costaleros" and are expected to carry these "tronos" with solemnity and grace.
The Virgin del Carmen festival was held on Thursday, 16 July 2009. It was an amazing experience that was enjoyed by people of all ages and nationalities. It was celebrated in every town along the Costa Tropical, but there were particularly large celebrations in Torrenueva and La Caleta because the patron saint of these fishing villages is the Virgin del Carmen.
As rum connsieurs know, not all rums are the same. A local rum, that has been produced since 1963 using sugar cane from the Costa Tropical, has just received international acclaim from the Institute of Taste and Quality in Brussels for its taste, smell and appearance. This is really quite an honour considering that this rum until recently had only been for sale within the province of Granada. If you’re a fan of quality rum, you can now visit the recently remodeled bodega of Ron Montero.
