Cycling on the Costa Tropical

Discover why Granada is the ideal cycling destination

At Cumbre Villas, we are passionate about sport, and especially about cycling. Our privileged area has become an increasingly popular destination for cyclists from all over the world. It is no coincidence that every year more amateur teams, professional riders and international cycling enthusiasts choose the Costa Tropical to train, enjoy and unwind on two wheels. Within the field of sports tourism, the area has firmly positioned itself as one of the emerging destinations for cycling holidays in Spain and Andalusia. The varied landscapes and excellent road conditions make it an outstanding place to ride. Whether road cycling, mountain biking, gravel or e-biking, there is something here for every taste and level.

The roads, with wide shoulders and drivers who generally respect the 1.5-metre passing distance, lead you to every corner of the Granada coast. The mild climate throughout the year — with over 325 days of sunshine and an average daytime temperature of 20 degrees — allows for year-round cycling, something particularly appreciated by cyclists from northern Europe looking to train in optimal conditions. The scenery changes constantly, from coastal routes to the arid landscapes around Calahonda, and on to the pine forests surrounding the two historic routes to Granada: the famous Puerto de la Cabra and the Lecrín Valley. And that is without even mentioning the Axarquía, one of the most internationally recognised areas for both road and mountain biking, offering yet more spectacular climbs.

If you prefer not to tackle mountain passes, you can simply follow the coastline. This allows you to ride long distances with relatively little elevation gain — ideal for endurance rides, base training or more relaxed outings, perhaps stopping for a coffee in Málaga harbour before heading back. If climbing is your thing, it is hard to pick a single favourite route, but we have listed some of our top choices below. And if you really want to push yourself, you can drive up to Sierra Nevada and ride up Mount Veleta, even with snow still visible in June. It is the fourth highest peak in Spain and one of the highest paved climbs in Europe, internationally renowned and regularly used by professional cyclists for training.

The Costa Tropical and the province of Granada have also established themselves as a regular setting for cycling events, sportives and international team training camps, thanks to the combination of demanding climbs, quiet roads and cyclist-friendly services such as accommodation, workshops, specialised cafés and signposted routes. A clear example of this international exposure is the recurring presence of La Vuelta a España in the province of Granada. In recent years, several stages have passed through or finished in nearby locations such as Motril, Almuñécar, La Alpujarra and Sierra Nevada, showcasing the spectacular roads, climbs and landscapes to a worldwide audience. Granada continues to feature in future editions as well, reinforcing its reputation as a top-level cycling destination.

Several members of our team are regular cyclists themselves. Sascha cycles to work almost every day on his electric bike from high up in the mountains and knows countless off-road routes in the hills behind Almuñécar. Ángel enjoys mountain biking in La Alpujarra, Serena rides road bikes three or four times a week throughout the province, and Fabiola likes to head out occasionally on her gravel bike. Thanks to this hands-on experience, we know the quieter roads, the best times to ride and the must-stop cafés. We are always happy to share the beautiful cycling routes of the Costa Tropical with our clients — and several have already joined us on a ride and been truly amazed!

The Costa Tropical is also home to cycling talent. One of the most prominent current examples is the young professional cyclist Carlos Rodríguez, from Almuñécar, who competes at the highest level of international cycling. His progress in Grand Tours and WorldTour races is a clear reflection of the region’s sporting potential and an inspiration to many cyclists training on these same roads.

For all these reasons, it comes as no surprise that Cumbre Villas is the main sponsor of the Asociación Ciclista La Herradura (ACLH) for the 2025–2027 season. This multigenerational and international cycling club has members from all over the world — cyclists who have fallen in love with the Costa Tropical of Granada and made it their base to live, train or spend extended periods. With more than 120 members practising road cycling, mountain biking (including e-bikes), BMX, pump track and more, there is no shortage of potential riding companions. Some members also compete in various disciplines. And there are more and more women joining the club every year! Serena is one of them and she will be delighted to introduce you to the club and the best routes in the area.

According to Cumbre Villas, ACLH stands out not only for its atmosphere and diversity, but also for its carefully curated image and commitment to quality. The club’s elegant and technical kit is designed by Gobik — the same brand worn by professional teams in the Tour de France and la Vuelta a España. Wearing the club kit is a way to feel part of the local cycling community, ride in comfort and style, and enjoy cycling as it is understood here: unhurried, enjoyable and always accompanied by views of the Mediterranean.

Get in touch with us to purchase your cycling kit or to join a club ride, followed by the best speciality coffee on the coast at the cycling café Coche Coche in La Herradura. Because here, cycling does not end when you get off the bike — it continues on the terrace, sharing routes, stories and the Mediterranean lifestyle that so many cyclists seek when choosing Andalusia as their cycling destination.

Why the Costa Tropical is perfect for cycling and cycling holidays

Because it combines what many cycling destinations seek and few truly offer: mild weather all year round, quiet and well-maintained roads, demanding mountain climbs just a few kilometres from the sea, and a relaxed, authentic way of life. Here you can train like a professional in the morning, enjoy the beach or local gastronomy in the afternoon, and share cycling experiences at sunset.

The Costa Tropical is not just a place to ride — it is a place to stay, return to and, for many, even to live.
